Signs from the Universe: Synchronicities and the Law of Attraction
- The universe sends us signals, which manifest in synchronicities.
- Psychologist Carl Jung coined the term synchronicity, and had a very strange story to back up his theory.
- Synchronicities are uncanny coincidences.
- They mean two different important things in the Law of Attraction.
- If you haven’t received any signs, you are not opening yourself up to them.
- There is a way to ask for signs from the universe.
Our brains are programmed to seek patterns. That’s how early humans avoided danger, created language, and remembered their way back home. Using this scientific fact as an argument against synchronicities makes less sense to me than using it to explain the phenomenon.
If we’re programmed to seek patterns – we should be seeking them out. Reasonable, no?
If we’re programmed to seek patterns – we should be seeking them out.
Let’s start at the beginning. Since I began talking about the Law of Attraction on YouTube, I’ve been asked the question: “How do I know my desire is manifesting?” or the more specific, “What do these signs in my life mean?”
This is where the principle of synchronicity comes in. First coined in the 20th century by Swiss psychologist Carl Jung, synchronicities are uncanny coincidences or an unlikely occurrence of parallel events. In spirituality, we observe synchronicities as signs from the universe.
In his 1952 book Synchronicity, Jung wrote about a patient he had who was proving difficult to treat, describing her as “psychologically inaccessible.” He wrote that this patient felt she “always knew everything.” He wrote that he had to “confine himself to the hope” that something would burst her strictly rational way of thought. Though he made no mention of the law of attraction, Jung was clearly asking the universe for help in getting through to this patient.
That occurrence poked a hole in this woman’s exaggerated sense of rationalism.
One day, the same patient was telling him about a dream she had the night before in which someone gifted her an expensive piece of jewelry in the shape of a golden scarab. As she was still telling Jung about the story, he heard a tapping on the window near him. On the windowsill was a scarab beetle in a green-gold color, trying to get into the room. He let the beetle in and handed it to his patient, and said, “Here is your scarab.”
That occurrence poked a hole in this woman’s exaggerated sense of rationalism and ultimately helped in her treatment. Not only was it the sign Jung had asked for, it was also so unlikely that it shook up her perception of reality a little bit.
Why does the universe send signs?
One reason the universe sends us signs is to shift our ego-centric conscious thinking to a greater wholeness. These unlikely but meaningful occurrences give us a glimpse to the underlying workings of the universe. Thereby, they reaffirm our faith and our belief that there is a greater power at work at all times. There is more to reality than the banality of daily life.
The other, more popular reason the universe sends us signs, is to prepare us to receive what we have asked for. The more often the signs occur, the closer we are to receiving or manifesting a desire or something we have been thinking about for a while.
For example, you may have asked the universe for a new car. You visualized, you gave thanks, you detached, and you are now ready and open to receive. Suddenly, you see that car everywhere you go, when before you never even noticed it. You hear people talking about it all the time. You see ads for it in magazines and on television.
What are signs? How can I recognize them?
You can see, feel, and hear signs. There’s a way you can recognize whether something is a sign or just an everyday coincidence. There will be two distinct events that happen very closely in time, within hours or within the same day. Examples of synchronistic signs are as follows: thinking of someone you haven’t thought about in years and then running into them, or hearing about them later on that day; hearing a phrase or sentence for the first time ever then suddenly hearing it everywhere, or seeing a certain number everywhere such as 11:11 or 4:44 or 22 or 33.
Why am I not receiving signs?
Signs are everywhere, at all times, which means that if you haven’t received even one, you aren’t open to them. You have to open your mind and your heart to the possibility of more, then be more aware and alert. Amazing situations can happen when our inner awareness changes. You will find one sign, then another, and they will become more and more visible to you as your desire manifests. Your energetic thoughts and intentions will align with all the natural vibrations around you, opening you up to more of these experiences.
Some people wonder whether signs are just manifestations.
Some people wonder whether signs are just manifestations – I suppose it depends on the specific situation. If you write in your journal one morning, “I miss so and so. I hope to see them.” and then you see them, I suppose that is a manifestation and not a sign from the universe. A sign would be like, you are thinking of someone randomly, and they text you later that day.
You didn’t express a desire to hear from them – you just thought of them. There’s a fine line. However, to really determine whether you manifested the sign or whether the universe is sending you synchronicities, you’re going to have to go with your intuition. I never realized this was a problem until someone pointed it out to me. I can always intuitively know whether it’s a sign or a manifestation, and you can too, if you listen to your higher consciousness.
How can I ask the universe for signs?
We don’t attract synchronistic experiences when we want them. They come to us when we detach and let go. We see them when we are not thinking of them, because being on the look out for them creates resistance.
However, we can ask the universe for direction and even for signs.
After going through the process of attracting and getting your vibration on the right frequency, you can say, “Thank you for bringing this to me, universe. Please let me know if I must do anything now, and please show me when it is getting close.”
You will receive a sign or be pointed in a certain direction soon.
Do signs ever point you in another direction?
Signs will sometimes point you in another direction – that is, after all, what they are there for. When that happens, it’s a universal sign that there may be something better out there for you. It’s almost like the universe asking you, are you sure this is what you want?
Referring to the other example, you may start seeing another car all the time. You’ll see it everywhere, even though you didn’t ask for it. At this point, you can either reaffirm what you want by saying, This car is very nice, but I’m glad I’m getting this other car. Or, if you like this new car the universe is pointing you to better, you say, I’m so glad I chose this car instead.
You asked for a sign. This is it. It’s coming.
Understanding synchronicities and universal signs will improve your practice. It will allow you to become a better attractor through reinforcing your belief in something greater. You asked for a sign. This is it. It’s coming.
