Like millions around the world, Tony Robbins is a huge inspiration to me. He is actually the first person I learned about “limiting beliefs” from. He once said, “many people are passionate, but because of their limiting beliefs about who they are and what they can do, they never take actions that could make their dream a reality.“
This is an important observation about human nature. We let ourselves down constantly because of belief that we can’t do something. Fortunately, there is a way to combat the perception that you are not enough. There is a way to fight through the insecurity – you just have to learn it. And the good news is – it’s not difficult.
What are limiting beliefs?
Limiting beliefs are ones that are, more often than not, not completely our own. Starting at our physical incarnation on this planet, we formulate an opinion of ourselves and of the world around us that is affected and influenced by the media, corporations, our parents, our siblings, our families, our peers, friends, communities, teachers, religious leaders, etc…
Beliefs are so important because they can impact us, not only on a spiritual level, but on a cellular one. Our beliefs tend to show up in our appearances, in our body language, in the people we surround ourselves with, the career choices we make, and even who we choose to date. Our beliefs have a huge impact on our realities, as they live in our subconscious mind and influence every decision we make “consciously.”

At some point in time, most people realize that they can alter the way that they think to positively influence their mind. If you’re reading this, you’re likely someone who seeks out ways to become a better version of themselves. You’re likely working towards the life of your dreams. Well – you’re on the right path!
Altering these deeply embedded patterns in your brain will help you create beliefs that cultivate happiness, confidence, peace, success, and love.
Remember that life is 80% mindset and 20% mechanics.
How do we identify our limiting beliefs?
The first step to working through a problem is admitting you have one, and then identifying it. To figure out what beliefs we hold that are damaging to us, we need to start being more mindful of the things we say, the actions we take, and the thoughts that we think. We have to trace all of them back to the belief they came from.
For example, you may be invited out for drinks and dinner with your friends. You want to go, but you think, “I need to save money or I’ll be broke. I can’t afford to go out to eat.” That thought stems from a belief.
Whenever you say or think a sentence like, “I would love to…but I can’t because…” that is a limiting belief.
A second technique to figure out what your beliefs are is to think and ask yourself what your ideal life looks like. Imagine your perfect life scenario. Now, consider what thoughts came from that – what is holding you back from living that life right now?
The negative thoughts that arose after this question are all limiting beliefs.
What do we do about them once we’ve identified them?
Identifying the belief is half the battle. Now that you know what they are, it’s time to do something about them.
First, understand that it is okay that you have these thoughts. Your limiting beliefs were created by people who love you and want to protect you – just as much as people who don’t have the best intentions for you, and for a society that wants to manipulate you to fit into a neat little box.
They aren’t going to go away overnight, but each day you practice working through them gets you closer to the other side and to where you desire to be.
As someone who no longer lets doubt disempower me and has rewritten the majority of her own beliefs, I can guarantee that this place is attainable.
- Understand that your story is not who you are, your past doesn’t define you. Just because something happened in the past, doesn’t mean it will happen again. It also doesn’t influence the rest of your future. Don’t make decisions based on the past. Make them based on who you are TODAY, who you decided to wake up as this morning.
- Read books or blogs that open your mind
- Watch movies that change your perspective on life
- Take trips to see new things and marvel at the world
- Search out success stories.
- Focus on your wins, even the small ones.
- Go back to the beliefs you identify and write three reasons why they may not be true (each)
- Change your surroundings as much as possible if it’s holding you back. That includes your home, work, and the people you surround yourself with. Choose to be friends with people who nurture your dreams.
Lastly, think of who you would be if you didn’t have these beliefs holding you back. Write about that person, envision them – then decide you are them. Become that person. You are already working towards being your limitless self.

Interesting article. I always knew that I had a tendency to limit myself or believe certain things and not question them, or act a certain way and for a lot of these things never questionned them.
I like the idea of the exercise where we write down our limiting beliefs and find 3 reasons why they may not be true, I will do that for sure 🙂

Can anybody explain the term ‘self-limiting belief’? It is the unsupportive or unconscious presumption that forces an individual to take half-hearted steps towards vanquishing. Sometimes, it can make him feel conflicted about getting involved. Then, what he can do to get rid of his curbing assumptions. First, he needs to identify his unconscious postulations, invest in himself, take strong attempts to visualize success, reframe his mind, and hire a capable life coach, by which he can eliminate his restraining hypothesis and upgrade his thought.
